ABOUT DUSSELDORF
Dusseldorf houses "the longest bar in the world", Germany's finest shopping boulevard, and countless museums, theatres and attractions underscoring the city as a major arts centre. It offers the legendary cheer of the Rhineland with all its quaint traditions in perfect harmony with all the luxuries of a truly cosmopolitan city.
Duesseldorf has emerged from being an insignificant farming settlement on the banks of Dussel, to a lively cosmopolitan metropolis that acts as a magnet for the fashion world, where its luxurious Koenigsstrasse has become a public catwalk of seeing and being seen. The city puts on countless fashion shows and shoe fairs making it the undisputed destination for 'shopaholics'. Think you're no longer in Germany? Get lost in the Altstadt, hide away in one of 250 bars or have a double-digit number of museums and attractions at your fingertips.
Duesseldorf is the perfect choice for the traveller who wants the cosmopolitan weekend with theatre, opera; or for the night owl looking for a party. For parties, underground clubs and second hand shops, head to the students' part of town, Bilk. An obligatory area to visit also includes the harbour, also known as the media-mile, which over the last ten years has been made into the most modern and trendy area of the city with the help of Guggenheim-architect Frankf O Gehry. Located on Germany's biggest river, the Rhine, you will find yourself at the centre of many of Germany's most spectacular events and all-year-round fests.
Düsseldorf is a meeting point for connoisseurs of architecture from all over the world.
A wide, diversified range of architectural styles is the trademark of the city on the Rhine. Renowned architects from the Art Nouveau period such as Josef Maria Olbrich and Peter Behrens, the director of the famous arts and crafts school, left their marks long before the present-day stars of international architecture, Frank O. Gehry, Claude Vasconi and David Chipperfield, who shaped the MediaHarbour.
The creative climate on the Rhine is reflected in the exquisite displays of the city's numerous design shops, amongst them the spectacular 'stilwerk' department store which has become the mecca for trendsetters in all matters of lifestyle.
The Rhine embankment promenade is considered worldwide the most beautiful walk along the Rhine. Its construction has re-linked the city with the river - a welcome invitation to stroll or stay a while. The steps on Burgplatz are one of Düsseldorf's most popular meeting places for the locals.
Would you like to explore Düsseldorf and its surroundings from the water? From April to October, the Weiße Flotte and the Köln-Düsseldorfer (KD) run regular boat tours.
After the successful first Quadriennale in 2006, on occasion of which all the major Düsseldorf art institutions together with the city of Düsseldorf, the state capital, showed an outstanding - and well attended, with approx. 380,000 visitors - series of exhibitions on the theme of "Bodies", the joint approach of these institutions of the visual arts continues: under the title „ArtCity Düsseldorf" the Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen comprising the K20 and K21 galleries, the museum kunst palast, the Kunsthalle Düsseldorf, the Kunstverein für die Rheinlande und Westfalen, the NRW Forum für Kultur und Wirtschaft, the Akademie-Galerie and the most recently opened art space, KIT (Kunst im Tunnel).
ArtCity will present itself at the ITB 2007 International Tourism Exchange (March 7 - 10, hall 8.2 stand 104) to highlight the mature art tradition of Düsseldorf in a joint initiative and to strengthen the city's long-standing reputation as an important destination in cultural tourism.
The Art Academy forms the nucleus of the exciting environment which is the art city Düsseldorf and has produced many internationally famous artists: Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, Jörg Immendorff or the great stars of photography such as Andreas Gursky, Thomas Ruff, Thomas Struth or Candida Höfer. Together with the Academy and a lively museum landscape, Düsseldorf has been augmented since the 1980s with a steadily growing and decidedly heterogeneous spectrum of more than 100 galleries and art spaces. Their programmes range from classical modernism to various contemporary positions. These galleries also see themselves as forums for the graduates of the Art Academy and the lively Rhenish art scene, further enlivening the scene and attracting the next generation of artists. |
